A longitudinal study of Babesia and Theileria infections in cattle in Sri Lanka OAK
Sivakumar, Thillaiampalam; Kothalawala, Hemal; Weerasooriya, Gayani; Seekkuge Susil Priyantha Silva; Puvanendiran, Sumathy; Munkhjargal, Tserendorj; Igarashi, Ikuo; Yokoyama, Naoaki.
Throughout the world, infections with the Babesia and Theileria parasites often result in economically significant clinical disease in cattle. We conducted a longitudinal survey of Babesia and Theileria infections in cattle from the Polonnaruwa (n?=?75; dry zone) and Nuwara Eliya (n?=?161; wet zone) districts of Sri Lanka. DNA from blood samples collected in June, September, and December 2014 and March 2015 was screened for Babesia bovis, Babesia bigemina, Theileria annulata and Theileria orientalis using specific polymerase chain reactions (PCRs). Additionally, serum samples collected from the animals were screened using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) to detect B. bovis- and B. bigemina-specific antibodies. All of the animals surveyed in...

A Model of Inflation for Sri Lanka AgEcon
Cooray, Arusha.
This paper uses two models: an open economy model and a closed economy model to estimate a price equation for Sri Lanka. The results suggest greater support for the open economy model. Consistent with previous studies for Sri Lanka, supply side factors appear to be important in influencing the general price level in Sri Lanka.

A Non-Parametric Analysis of Rice Production Efficiency in Sri Lanka AgEcon
Thibbotuwawa, Manoj; Mugera, Amin W.; White, Benedict.
This article investigates the production efficiency of rice farming in Sri Lanka using cross section survey data of 90 farms. Past studies on rice farming have mostly focused on technical efficiency (TE). Here, we examine technical efficiency, allocative efficiency (AE) and cost efficiency (CE) using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. On average, the farms were 87% technically efficient; irrigated farms were more efficient (88%) than rain-fed farms (82%). Average cost, allocative and scale efficiencies were 73%, 84% and 87%. Bias corrected TE estimate suggests an expected output expansion of 25% with a given input combination in order to become fully efficient as opposed to 16% based on the original estimates. In addition, a second stage Tobit...

Adjusting Monetary Measures of Poverty to Non-Monetary Aspects: An Analysis Based on Sri Lankan Data AgEcon
Weerahewa, Jeevika; Wickramasinghe, Kanchana.
This paper reassesses the status of poverty in Sri Lanka using a monetary measure which was adjusted for people's perceptions about the social climate. Data collected by the Sri Lanka Integrated Survey was used to obtain incidences of poverty using cost of basic need (CBN) poverty lines and poverty lines adjusted for people's perceptions. The results reveal that the poverty measurements significantly differ with the two approaches though poverty ranking remains more or less consistent.

An investigation into the taxonomy of Dendrelaphis tristis (Daudin, 1803): revalidation of Dipsas schokari (Kuhl, 1820) (Serpentes, Colubridae) Naturalis
Rooijen, J. van; Vogel, G..
The taxonomic status of the colubrid snake Dendrelaphis tristis (Daudin, 1803) was investigated on the basis of morphological data taken from 64 museum specimens. Univariate and multivariate analyses of these data reveal that Dendrelaphis tristis is composed of two species. One of these species agrees with the description of Dipsas schokari Kuhl, 1820 which is revalidated in the combination Dendrelaphis schokari (Kuhl, 1820). The syntypes of D. schokari have been lost and a type for D. tristis has never been deposited in a collection. Neotypes are designated and described for both species in order to stabilize the names. D. schokari differs from D. tristis in having a lower number of ventrals and subcaudals, a larger eye, a shorter vertebral stripe and the...

ANALYZING NEGOTIATION APPROACHES IN NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT - A CASE STUDY OF CROP-LIVESTOCK CONFLICTS IN SRI LANKA AgEcon
Birner, Regina.
Participatory approaches in natural resource management are increasingly being criticized for their tendency to neglect power relations and conflicts of interests. Negotiation approaches have been proposed as a strategy to overcome such shortcomings. Using the case of negotiations on crop-livestock conflicts in Sri Lanka as an empirical example, this paper proposes to apply the concept of political capital in combination with game theoretical modeling for an analysis of negotiation processes in natural resource management. The model serves to analyze both the incentive structure of the resource users, who are motivated by economic incentives, and the incentive structure of political decision-makers, who are motivated by political interests. The crucial...

Asian Elephants as Agricultural Pests: Damages, Economics of Control and Compensation in Sri Lanka AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
Despite growing attention to crop and property damage caused by the Asian elephant, uncertainty exists about the magnitude of this problem. This paper explores the nature and magnitude of this problem of Sri Lanka. An economic analysis of individual farmers’ decisions to control elephants is provided. Government policies to assist farmers to cope with the elephant pest problem are assessed. Appropriate compensation schemes for farmers are seen as potentially more effective for conserving elephants in Sri Lanka than legal prohibitions on killing of elephants. Issues raised have wider relevance than merely to Sri Lanka or Asian elephants.

Basin-level use and productivity of water: examples from South Asia AgEcon
Molden, David J.; Sakthivadivel, Ramasamy; Habib, Zaigham.
Discusses and illustrates concepts for identifying ways of improving productivity of water within basins. The results of applying a water accounting procedure to four sub-basins in South Asia (Bhakra in India; Chishtian in Pakistan; Huruluwewa in northern Sri Lanka; and Kirindi Oya in southern Sri Lanka) are presented. The methodology used identifies the quantities and productivity of various uses of water within a basin. This information is then used to identify the water-saving potential, and the means of improving the productivity of the managed supplies.

Changing Abundance of Elephants and Willingness to Pay for their Conservation AgEcon
Bandara, Ranjith; Tisdell, Clement A..
This paper explores the way in which the stated willingness to pay for the conservation of Asian elephants in Sri Lanka varies with hypothetical variations in their abundance. To do that, it relies on results from a sample of residents of Colombo. The willingness to pay function is found to be unusual. It increases at an increasing rate for hypothetical reductions in the elephant population compared to its current level (a level that makes the Asian elephant endangered) and also increases at a decreasing rate for increases in this population from its current level. Rational explanations are given for this relationship. The relationship is, however, at odds with relationships suggested in some of the literature for total economic value as a function of...

Cranial Capacity in an Adult Sri Lankan Population: Sexual Dimorphism and Ethnic Diversity International Journal of Morphology
Ilayperuma,I.
Cranial capacity exerts a close correlation with the volume of the brain. A large body of evidence shows a clear racial variation in cranial dimensions. Therefore detailed knowledge of the population specific data on biometric features of the cranial cavity is important in the study and comparison of the crania of populations from different racial backgrounds, assessing growth and development of an individual and in the diagnosis of any abnormalities of cranial size and shape. Despite its significance, little is known concerning the cranial capacity in Sri Lankans. Hence, the present study was undertaken to establish the cranial capacity in an adult Sri Lankan population. A total of 210 subjects with an age span of 20-23 years were included in the study....

Ecotourism/Wildlife based Tourism as Contributor to Nature Conservation with Reference to Vanni, Sri Lanka AgEcon
Tisdell, Clement A..
After discussing definitions of ecotourism, outlines possible economic and conservational benefits from developing ecotourism or wildlife-based tourism. Identifies possible economic benefits for local communities but also outlines possible economic costs to such communities. Observations are made on the potential of developing ecotourism in the Giant’s Tank/Mannar area. A sufficient market does not always exist for wildlife-based tourism to make it economically viable. Therefore, market analysis should be undertaken before promoting the development of wildlife-based tourism in a locality. A checklist is provided to give some guidance in market appraisal. It is observed that even non-consumptive wildlife-based tourism can have adverse environmental...

In Sri Lanka coconut poonac, a byproduct produced from the coconut oil production process, is being used for feeding dairy cattle. Though poonac is cheaper than formula feed, it is feared that the bad effects of cattle health due to its high fat content. This study clarified the economic effect of poonac feeding on dairy farming. We conducted interview survey with 40 small-scale farms in Kurunegala District, and analyzed the relationship among poonac feeding, cattle disease rate, raw milk production and dairy farming income by using the multiple regression analysis. The risk of cattle disease increased as poonac feeding. On the other hand, participation in the feeding training was effective in reducing outbreaks of disease in dairy cattle. Moreover, we...

Flexible Trade Policies in Agriculture Sectors of Developing Countries: Proposing a Technical Approach for Sri Lanka AgEcon
Herath, Anura.
After two decades of liberalized economic policies together with early accession to WTO, Sri Lanka could not achieve the exp ected fast economic growth. Agriculture growth in particular fell sharply. WTO Doha round expects a deeper liberalization. Instead, we will benefit more from being a friend of the "Development Box" and securing flexibility in tariff revisions. In asserting this, the paper analyzes impacts of liberalized policies on agriculture, stress the need for flexible trade policies and formulate a design for self designating Special Products (SP) and Special Safeguard Mechanisms (SSM). The past economic growth favoured mostly urbanised population. Sluggish rural agricultural growth, hurt with increased food imports, was the main cause of this...

Land settlement planning issues in irrigation management: A review of experiences in Sri Lanka AgEcon
Stanbury, Pamela.
This document is meant to present a framework for analyzing the institutions related to water management in a river basin context. The design of the five-country regional study undertaken by IWMI on “Development of Effective Water Management Institutions” provided a new methodology and a framework for river basin studies. It consists of four key components of diagnostic investigations related to water resources management in a river basin, which are interrelated. These key components are the physical system, water accounting, socioeconomic situation and performance. This study design is given in the Study’s Inception Report of 15 June 1999, and the Methodological Guidelines of 1 October 1999. This document takes one step further, and provides a conceptual...
